My first OE built site is live.
Its not finished, since I still have two pages to update. (I'm waiting on related information before I can finish the pages) There are also more items to add to the site, but that will be next month or later. Its a direct copy of a site I already had at this location (built with NetObjects Fusion). Only real difficulty I had is with the direct upload of the site. Setting up the FTP settings was a nightmare. And still is not correct. (My webhost support created a work around so I could get it working) The next site may need a similar workaround. I know some of you suggest using a FTP app like FileZilla (which I do have) to transfer the entire saved folder of of the website. But I prefer the internal upload system so that I can upload single pages or just changes. I make regular small changes to my sites, it will be tiresome to have to export the entire site and then use Filezilla to upload the entire site (every time I make a small change).

My second site is complete....well most of it is complete. Enough for now.
No, it is not a "responsive" website...meaning I have not created alternate versions for mobile. A very large percentage of my users are seniors on desktops and larger tablets. I have kept the site as narrow as possible, its only 1024px wide. But even on a smartphone, the site is not difficult to navigate just using your fingers and quick zoom. In fact, my customers spend a lot of time zooming in and out on photos, so they navigate quite well. Things are progressing smoothly now, since I have learned the basics of what I need. I am starting on my third website with OE. I am still unable to make the site publish work properly. I have enlisted the help of tech support at my Host, but they are stumped as well. When I try to upload directly into a dedicated folder within the public html folder, it keeps dumping the entire contents of the upload into the public html folder. And then, of course, the domain can't find the website. So...for this second website, I started using direct ftp into the dedicated folder. (Just export the website to folder on my PC, then use filezilla to transfer the files). Works perfectly every time and doesn't take very long now that I have mastered the method. Only drawback to this method, is when I make a small change to any part of the website, I still have to export and upload the entire website via ftp. Sure, I tell it to only swap files that have changed. But its a pain to have to go through so much, just for one small change. I would much rather use the quick publish from within the OE software. .... I do have one small question for anyone who has experience with the "pop up menu". If you visit my website https://papermodelshop.com/ and click on the "Aircraft" button (on the left)...a fly out menu will appear. This is a list of pages each devoted to one type of aircraft category. To add a new category (and its associated page link) takes a few steps, but isn't difficult. But I cannot rearrange the categories. I would prefer to rearrange into a different order. Even alphabetical would be acceptable. But I don't know how. As you add a new category, it adds at the end of the menu. You can drag and move a category into another category (makes a sub-category), but thats all. You cannot move a category in the list. (or, I don't see how to move it) Edited by madsgrandad - Sep 01 2023 at 2:41pm |

So, my server address is a number url - no problem User name and password are no problem. Site URL - in my case that is a forwarded domain. The actual url of the site is davesdesigns.ca/public_html/papermodelshop/ and Default Directory is not public html. It is public_html/papermodelshop. And yet, the files still go into the public html folder, which is wrong. "auto" is the only option that worked, with a special ftp directory created by my host. re moving categories in the pop up menu: I did what you said (the curved arrow) and it moves it to be a sub-category of the one the arrow is pointing to. ... no, wait...I got it! okay I see the arrow now, and yes, it works. Thank you.

I fixed it!@!
woohoo!! I got the Publish settings to work. I had an error in the site URL. One letter missing. Hard to see. But the URL needs to be what I said: the actual location of the site, not the domain. And then I changed the Default Directory to be the exact path to where I put the website files. not just public_html, but the whole thing, public_html/papermodelshop Upload folder stays as Upload And it worked...I uploaded one small change in the site and it worked. Only problem is, it took a very long. The ftp transfer using filezilla is ten times quicker! So I will probably use both methods, depending on how I feel.

Exactly such small details make the OE so simple and convenient to handle. For larger projects, such update/move may sometimes take awhile; do not abort. OE is just intuitive simple, w/o to care about complicated handling. That asks for a certain own learning intitiative, even if it promises 'non costs' (!not promising instant!) - one still has to invest how to handle it. As with any other program. Sometimes trial and err.Your site looks good. For my taste a bit overloaded, but that sure lies in the metier. ![]() Upload: With ftp you have always to compile and to upload the complete project, unless you specify certain pages only. That asks for serious trouble. Especially it the project is huge. Small projects with fast internet usually are no prob to transfer completely. To transfer directly from OE in differential mode, you may automatically transfer the modified object(s) only. Even if it takes a longer time, it is much safer. Nevertheless, I recommend to occasionally upload te complete project ayway. Incl backups. Reason: the transfer might have been interrupted sometimes by some reason. That could confuse the OE, as any other project else, but would be pretty hard to find, if it failed once. You noticed that I'm not a native english speaker/writer. That's right, I'm native German.
With some 50 years in computer development and education. In Amerika, Europe, in Russia, in China. I still cannot be perfect in english Cambride class C. Edited by digizar - Sep 02 2023 at 4:53pm |

Looking at your site: https://davesdesigns.ca/funandgames, I saw that the Alternatative Text is left blank on each images.
May I suggest that you fill this property with relevant data, it make things easyer for search engines. |
